Damith Herath obtained his PhD in robotics from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Autonomous Systems (CAS) at the University of Technology, Sydney. He received his BSc Eng (Hons) degree in production engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Damith is a Professional Mechanical Engineer according to the Institution of Engineers Australia. He started his engineering career as a Trainee Engineer at Hayleys, one of the largest manufacturing conglomerates in Sri Lanka. Since then he has worked as a researcher, academic and a consultant in fields related to Robotics, Automation and Manufacturing (and Robotic Art). He has had consulting engagements with MAS Holdings and the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney amongst others.
Damith began his academic carrier in 2000 working on CIM systems. Moving on to mobile robotics research in 2003 at CAS – he has worked on developing novel algorithms used in robot navigation and perception. Over the last five years, at the MARCS Institute, he led a number of multidisciplinary robotic research projects (with successful grants in excess of AUD 300k) that have received widespread
recognition – including a finalist position at the Annual Engineering Excellence Awards in Sydney. He has developed numerous research collaborations with international partners including those in Germany, Japan, Canada, USA and Sri Lanka.
